Timo Werner faces Tottenham axe as Son Heung-min update puts ace ‘under pressure’
Ange Postecoglou is likely to axe “under pressure” Timo Werner in favour of the returning Son Heung-min for the Premier League clash between Tottenham and Brighton, according to Alan Hutton.
Werner joined the ranks in North London on a temporary basis during the January transfer window and has been a regular in Postecoglou’s side since, starting Spurs’ last four matches in all competitions from the left flank with Richarlison deployed through the middle.
But with Son set to return from the Asian Cup for Tottenham’s Premier League clash with Brighton on Saturday (10 February) it remains to be seen whether the Germany international will be able to hold down his place in Spurs’ starting XI.
While Hutton admits that he always expected Werner to miss a number of chances, he thinks it will be down to the 27-year-old to prove to Postecoglou that he deserves to start week in and week out by starting to take those chances in the final third.
“His place will be under pressure,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“I think that’s where it costs him as a player, he’s coming into an area of the pitch where if Richarlison is scoring and Son is playing, it’s probably going to be him that will drop out.
“We all kind of knew that he is that kind of guy that can make something happen. He’s got pace, he can get by players, but when he gets into those opportunities, he needs two or three of them to score and I don’t think at this level you’re going to get that.
“That’s why I think he originally moved on (from Chelsea), so it’s going to be down to him. If he gets into the positions and scores goals, he’ll play. If not he’ll probably drop onto the bench.”
Timo Werner set for Tottenham axe after Son Heung-Min development
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody who watched Werner during his time at Chelsea that the German forward has been guilty of missing one or two clear-cut chances already in his Spurs career as that is just part of his game.

However, with Son once again fit and available, it seems inevitable that the 27-year-old will be replaced by the South Korean as Richarlison’s recent form has made him almost undroppable at the moment.
Postecoglou needs strength in depth and Werner will certainly still have a part to play this season, but it doesn’t seem likely that the Leipzig loanee will be a guaranteed starter despite his promising start to life in North London.
