Timo Werner blasted as Tottenham make £8.5million transfer decision
Tottenham have decided on Timo Werner’s long-term future in North London ahead of the summer.
Werner has struggled for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season, scoring just once in 27 matches.
The German recently returned to action after missing a month through injury, replacing James Maddison in the 1-0 Premier League defeat against Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday (26 February).
However, this was not a popular decision among the Spurs faithful, with Postecoglou blasted for the substitution.
Therefore, it is no surprise what Tottenham have now decided to do with Werner.

Tottenham to avoid signing Werner permanently
As reported by The Mirror (2 March), Tottenham are set to pass up on their option to sign Werner permanently from RB Leipzig for £8.5million.
Sources close to Werner expect the 28-year-old to return to Leipzig in the summer before considering his options, regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season.
And ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – will be glad to see the back of the misfiring forward.
“I think he will be part of the squad until the end of the season,” King said.
“That is the agreement that Spurs have with Leipzig. However, I’m quite pleased that Spurs have made this decision, I would have made the decision in the winter transfer window.
Tottenham | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Timo Werner | 41 | 3 | 6 |
“He certainly isn’t going to be a miss for me, he isn’t a Tottenham player, he never has been. He isn’t good enough for the club. Therefore, I would imagine he will remain as a squad player until the loan is finished.”

Tottenham right to not sign Werner from RB Leipzig
Spurs were perhaps unwise to sign Werner on loan for a second time at the beginning of the season, with fans no doubt sceptical after his underwhelming initial loan spell.
Werner did have the chance to prove fans wrong this season. However, he has failed to perform, and only further justified any doubts around his ability to play in the Premier League.
Therefore, Spurs are absolutely making the right decision by not signing him permanently. While the fee is only £8.5m, and some might argue he could be a useful squad player at that price, that money is better off being invested into a big-name signing who will actually push Tottenham forward.
