Spurs Expert: ‘Outstanding’ Jamie Donley is ‘star of the show’ for Tottenham Under-21s

Jamie Donley was the “star of the show” as Tottenham Under-21s beat Fleetwood Town 6-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 24 February, according to John Wenham.

Spurs’ youngsters advanced to the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup with a big win in front of 2,000-plus Tottenham supporters.

It was a chance for Wayne Burnett’s side to demonstrate what they are capable of in front of a large crowd after their incredible form this season which leaves them top of the Premier League 2, undefeated after 12 matches.

Reflecting on the result, Wenham has piled the praise on several of Spurs’ stars that day, reserving his biggest mention for Donley.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “It was a great occasion to be in the stadium and see the Under-21s win so comfortably.

“Donley grabbed four assists, Will Lankshear scored a hattrick, the pair of them were outstanding and I’m sure all the players thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

“Donley really was the star of the show. He demonstrated his versatility by playing in an advanced midfield role alongside Dane Scarlett, who has never really played in that role before.

“It was great to see Scarlett get back on the scoresheet and open his account for the season.

“The Under-21s have been performing so well this year so this result was to be expected. They have got some big games coming up now as they look to wrap up the Premier League 2 title, and Donley will have a big part to play in the coming weeks.”

Jamie Donley has a big future under Ange Postecoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

For many of Spurs’ Under-21s, this would have been their first time playing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, Donley already knows what that is like, and he has played at the ground in front of a far bigger crowd than the 2,000-plus who made the trip to North London that afternoon.

His four assists showcased his enormous potential and suggested that Under-21 football has perhaps become too easy for the 19-year-old.

Ange Postecoglou has clearly been impressed by Donley this season, having handed him four senior appearances, including three in the Premier League.

Donley’s stock is only continuing to rise, and the forward will already be thinking about his next move.

A loan next season would certainly make sense, or perhaps Postecoglou already has plans for him to be in the first-team setup.

Either way, Donley is ready for a step up, and his performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Fleetwood Town was a clear reminder of that.
