Sporting CP land multi-million blow to Tottenham after transfer announcement
Sporting Lisbon have delivered a multi-million blow to Tottenham after a transfer announcement.
As reported by Sky Sports News via X (3 February), Burnley have signed winger Marcus Edwards – who was previously mooted to make a return to Tottenham – on loan with an obligation to make the transfer permanent for £8million depending on the Clarets’ success this season.
Edwards joined Sporting Lisbon from Tottenham, with the North London club including a 35 per cent sell-on clause in the deal [via Football London, 31 May].
However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t believe Spurs are set to benefit financially from this sell-on clause anymore as a result of how Edwards’ move to Burnley has been structured.
“Edwards has signed for Burnley,” Wenham said.
“That deal was probably done in a way to cut Tottenham out of their 35 per cent sell-on clause. Therefore, they will be frustrated about that scenario.
“How that would have been done is Burnley would have paid a large loan fee, and that isn’t part of the sale of the player. It has been done that way so that Sporting keep the maximum amount of money and Tottenham miss out.
“That has been done on purpose, make no mistake about it.”

Edwards’ stock was quite high only a year ago, with comparisons being made between the 26-year-old and James Maddison. Therefore, a lot of people might be surprised to see him make a move to the Championship.
However, for Daniel Levy, that feeling of surprise will quickly be replaced by the feeling of frustration.

At one point it looked as though Edwards might join a big club in Europe for a lucrative fee, which would have seen Spurs benefit financially.
However, that is no longer the case, and if Edwards’ move to Turf Moor is made permanent, at best Spurs will make a few million.
