Son Heung-min could quit Tottenham despite recent contract announcement

Son Heung-min could yet leave Tottenham despite a recent contract announcement.

Spurs announced via the club’s official website on Tuesday (7 January) that they had exercised the option to extend Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026.

However, Dominic Solanke’s muted reaction to the news as well as fan outrage underlines the strange feeling around the contract extension.

Therefore, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Son could still seek an exit route out of North London.

“I think he is getting to an age now where he feels that there could be another move if Spurs don’t win something,” King said.

“They still have a chance in the Carabao Cup after grinding out a result against Liverpool. Son is a very loyal player, he is very honourable. He’s had a wonderful playing career, without much success.

“He’s been a great servant to Tottenham, and this contract situation should have been sorted out months ago. However, he is at an age now where he is going to have one more big move.”

Son Heung-min to quit Tottenham despite contract extension?

Son is now contracted to Tottenham until 2026. However, that doesn’t necessarily guarantee that he will remain with the club until that date.

While a January exit seems unlikely, the club could still cut ties with the South Korean this summer if a suitable offer comes in and the forward doesn’t show signs of improvement between now and the end of the season.

With clubs such as Barcelona having expressed an interest [via The Telegraph, 7 January], there certainly wouldn’t be a shortage of suitors for Son.

However, for now, it seems as though his future lies in North London, although this is not an announcement which has been as well received as some might have thought.
