Son Heung-min behind-the-scenes role mooted amid Tottenham exit speculation

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min’s long-term future in North London remains unclear.

As reported by The Times (21 December), Spurs continue to insist that they will exercise their option to extend Son’s contract – which expires at the end of this season – by another year, with suggestions having been made that the deal is already done.

However, nothing has yet been made official, and the South Korean is thought to be frustrated by this.

As a result, speculation has emerged [via ESPN, 31 December] that Son could be on the move in January. However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has instead speculated a behind-the-scenes role for the 32-year-old at Spurs.

“Spurs won’t let him go in January,” King said.

“It would be a big mistake to let him go in January. He is one of the best and most loyal players at Tottenham. I’m not sure what is happening with this contract situation. However, I can’t see why they would want to lose Son.

“There is no sense in them letting him leave. The only sensible thing to do would be to extend his contract. They could even use him in a coaching role if they’re unsure of how many games he will be able to play next season.”

Son Heung-min to remain at Tottenham beyond January?

Son hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks, with calls for the player to be moved on as a result of his underwhelming form. However, as the old saying goes, form is temporary, but class is permanent.

Therefore, Tottenham would be unwise to allow Son to leave in the middle of the season, especially with the amount of players they have out injured.

However, they would perhaps also be unwise to let Son leave in the summer too.

As King has suggested, the forward could be a big help behind the scenes, particularly as Yang Min-hyeok looks to settle in, and any money spent on the player’s wages will no doubt easily be recouped by the number of fans who come to North London just to watch Son play every single week.
