Sergio Reguilón will ‘definitely’ leave Tottenham despite recent Ange admission

Tottenham outcast Sergio Reguilón looks set to be handed a chance to turn his fortunes around in North London.

As a result of Destiny Udogie’s significant injury setback, Ange Postecoglou recently admitted [via The Standard, 3 January] that Reguilón “will get further opportunities”.

This marks quite the turn of events, as the Spaniard looked destined to quit the club and was even tipped for a reunion with José Mourinho [via AS, 18 December].

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – still wants Reguilón sold, and would go as far as to play an academy player ahead of the left-back.

“He shouldn’t be here,” Wenham said.

“This is a player who will definitely move on from the club in the summer. Therefore, I don’t think it is wise for him to play at all. In fact, I’d rather an academy player was handed those minutes.

“Reguilón needs to be moved on this month, if there is an opportunity to do that, then the club absolutely must take it and sign a replacement for Udogie if need be.”

Sergio Reguilón to quit Tottenham in January?

Whether or not Reguilón is handed opportunities in place of Udogie, it looks as though his future lies away from Tottenham, with a new contract not likely to be offered and his current deal expiring this summer.

Therefore, it doesn’t make any sense for Postecoglou to play the 28-year-old, especially after his recent disrespectful antics on social media.

While there are injury issues to contend with in North London, that doesn’t mean Spurs can afford to stop thinking long-term. With a key player like Udogie out, that should be seen as the perfect opportunity to hand one of the club’s many talented youth players a chance, rather than give those minutes to a player destined for the exit door.
