Sergio Reguilon wants to ‘get out’ of Tottenham despite new Brentford transfer update

Tottenham loanee Sergio Reguilon will want to “get out” of Spurs this summer, despite a permanent move to Brentford appearing to be off the cards, according to Alan Hutton.

The Spanish defender has enjoyed an impressive loan spell with the Bees in the second half of the season, having had a difficult temporary stint at Old Trafford with Manchester United at the start of the campaign.

In 12 Premier League appearances under Thomas Frank, the 27-year-old has laid on four assists, but an option to buy clause was not included in the full-back’s deal and his reported £100,000 a week wages appear to be too expensive for Brentford [The Athletic, 18 April].

While that will almost certainly mean Reguilon will return to Spurs, Hutton doesn’t believe the Spanish international will be willing to play “second fiddle” to Destiny Udogie and expects him to leave permanently.

“It’s an interesting one, I still think he’s a good player,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“He’s an attacking full-back and he’s gone out on loan and he’s done well. You look at the situation that’s just arisen at this moment in time and he’s an ideal fit to come in and play.

“There’s a lack of numbers there in the style that Ange wants to play so is that an option to bring him back into the fold? Is he going to be happy playing second fiddle? We know Udogie signed a massively long-term contract so he is there for the foreseeable and will be the go-to guy.

“Will Reguilon be happy to play second fiddle or not? I don’t think he will, to be honest with you, I think he’ll want to go somewhere and play, that will be his mindset.

“If he doesn’t go to Brentford because they can’t afford the deal or whatever, I think he’ll still look to try and get out in the summer.”

Will Brentford sign Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham permanently in the summer transfer window?

It has been clear this season that when Udogie is fit, Ange Postecoglou will start him. The Australian has almost built his team around his attack-minded full backs and Pedro Porro and Udogie have shone.

While it would have been useful to have Reguilon waiting in the wings now that the young defender is injured, the former Real Madrid man isn’t likely to be keen on providing injury cover as he enters the prime of his career.

Postecoglou has twice shipped the defender out on loan in his first season in North London and it doesn’t seem likely he will have changed his tune come the end of the season. It could be best for all parties if ties are cut this summer.

Whether anyone will be willing to take on the defender’s six-figure wages remains to be seen, but it seems likely Reguilon will do all that he can to ensure he isn’t a Tottenham player by the start of next season.
