Sergio Reguilon Tottenham exit mooted amid Fabrizio Romano update – Expert

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham hopes Tottenham can find a permanent solution for left-back Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon joined Manchester United on loan on transfer deadline day last summer (Manchester United Official Website, 1 September 2023).

The 27-year-old made 12 appearances for Erik Ten Hag’s men but has now returned to Tottenham after the Red Devils activated a break clause in the loan agreement, as reported by Fabrizio Romano via his official X account (2 January).

Romano provided an additional update, revealing that Reguilon is expected to move on from Tottenham again this month, with “loan options being considered” and German side Borussia Dortmund credited with an interest.

However, Wenham is hopeful that the club can find a permanent solution for the out-of-favour defender.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Looking ahead at the January transfer window at this early stage, there already seems to be a few things happening.

“Reguilon’s loan at Manchester United has been cancelled, and it looks as if he will subsequently join Borussia Dortmund, which I’m fine with. A loan move would put him in the shop window again, and hopefully, we can move him on permanently.”

Reguilon joined Tottenham in 2020 from Spanish giants Real Madrid in a deal worth up to £32million (Sky Sports News, 19 June 2020).

He was a hit in north London when he first arrived, making 36 appearances in his debut season and 31 the following year. Nonetheless, he fell down the pecking order at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under Antonio Conte and is not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

In other Tottenham news, one BBC pundit believes the club must “act quickly” to seal a signing this month.
