Bryan King is surprised that Manchester United are willing to sell Scott McTominay amid reported interest from Tottenham.

The ex-Spurs scout believes the Scotland international would start regularly under Ange Postecoglou.

As reported by The Sun (18 July), Tottenham could look to hijack Fulham's transfer for McTominay, with United demanding £40million to sell the midfielder.

And King - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - believes the 27-year-old would be an upgrade on Spurs' current midfield options.

“It surprises me that United would let him go,” King said.

“McTominay has bailed the manager out time and time again with his goals. However, we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes between him and Erik ten Hag. I'm shocked they'd let him leave.

“If he wants first-team football I think he would get it at Spurs. I’d sooner start him than Yves Bissouma or Pape Matar Sarr. He’d fill me with more confidence.”

Tottenham to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United?

There will likely be mixed feelings in North London about this potential signing.

McTominay does have quality and demonstrated that last season as he found the back of the net seven times in the Premier League.

His goals from midfield proved vital at times for United. However, supporters might be keen to see a bigger-name signing arrive at the club.

With the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall having already been signed, Tottenham are well-stocked in midfield.

Therefore, it might be wise for the club to focus more closely on other priority positions.
