Ryan Sessegnon has no long-term future at Tottenham after injury update
Tottenham expert John Wenham believes Ryan Sessegnon’s long-term future lies away from North London after yet another injury setback.
Sessegnon has been plagued by injuries since he made a £25million switch from Fulham almost five years ago (BBC Sport, 8 August 2019).
He has managed just 57 appearances since he arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, scoring three times and providing four assists.
Following his return to action in an FA Cup clash with Burnley in early January, Sessegnon this week underwent his second surgery in 12 months, this time on his right hamstring after he suffered a muscle injury while in action for Spurs’ Under-21s on Saturday 17 February (via The Independent, 29 February).
In light of this news, Wenham has detailed what he feels the long-term future holds for the 23-year-old.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “It’s really difficult because if last summer there was interest in Sessegnon from Nottingham Forest and Luton. He ended up picking up an injury which shut the door on any potential exit.
“Unfortunately, I don’t this his long-term future lies at Tottenham. In the summer he will have a year left on his contract and it’ll be about how fit he can get himself, but Tottenham find themselves in a very difficult position.
“If he had two years left on his deal, Spurs could have loaned him out next season to see how he got on fitness-wise and whether or not he could continue playing at the top level.
“However, they don’t have that option so I’m not sure what is going to happen with him. I suspect he will feature heavily in preseason and then the club can make a decision on his future thereafter.”
Can Ryan Sessegnon save his career at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?
Few people will be more frustrated about the way Sessegnon’s time at Spurs has gone than Sessegnon himself.
Considering the fee which was invested in the then-19-year-old, it is clear that those at Tottenham had high hopes for the former England Under-21 international.
It is hard to think of a player anywhere in European football who has had a tougher time with injuries over the past few years.

After he was recently spotted in first-team training, it felt like Sessegnon was finally going to turn a corner in N17 and have an opportunity to make an impact under Ange Postecoglou.
Unfortunately, that was not to be, and the Fulham academy graduate must instead bounce back from yet another setback, with his long-term future now very much up in the air.
