Rodrigo Bentancur blasted after ‘pathetic’ Tottenham incident v AZ Alkmaar
Rodrigo Bentancur once again let himself down after what he did as Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.
Ange Postecoglou’s side suffered a dreadful defeat in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 clash at the AFAS Stadion on 6 March.
Fans were calling for Postecoglou to be sacked by Tottenham after a decision he made ahead of kick off.
And things didn’t get any better for the North London side after proceedings got underway. Lucas Bergvall’s own goal in the 18th minute, which left Jamie O’Hara fuming, proved to be the match winner for the hosts.
However, it is Bergvall’s midfield partner Bentancur who has caused some anger after what he did.

Bentancur ‘lucky to avoid red’ for Tottenham v AZ Alkmaar
Bentancur was booked for a late challenge on Troy Parrott in the second half, which means the 27-year-old is suspended for the second leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (13 March).
As a result, the former Juventus star was left enraged with the referee. However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – cannot understand why Bentancur reacted the way he did.
“Bentancur will start against Bournemouth as he is suspended for next week’s game,” Wenham said.
“Just on that, I mean what was that all about? That was pathetic by him. It was only because James Maddison pulled him away that he wasn’t shown a second yellow card.
Tottenham 2024/25 | Appearances | Starts | Suspended |
Rodrigo Bentancur | 30 | 25 | 7 |
“I could see him getting sent off the way he was aggressively shouting and screaming. He has been suspended several times this season and it doesn’t seem to stop with him.
“He seems to be favoured over Yves Bissouma based on how many games he starts. However, he needs to cut these petulant incidents out.”

Bentancur needs to improve his discipline at Tottenham
Bentancur could be offered £150,000-a-week by Tottenham to sign a new contract in North London.
However, if he is going to be offered that deal, he needs to improve his discipline as there is no point in Spurs paying that kind of money to a player who is constantly unavailable due to suspension.
