Richarlison wows Sky Sports pundit as Tottenham fail to deal with Everton muscle

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Richarlison for his two Tottenham goals in the draw at Everton where his team were arguably the weaker side.

The Brazilian turned a Destiny Udogie cross into the far top corner on the volley in the opening minutes against his former side on 3 February, and then restored Spurs’ lead before the half with a well-placed finish from outside the box.

Ange Postecoglou’s men couldn’t hold on for the points as Jarrad Branthwaite, a target heading into the January transfer window, made it 2-2 in the 94th minute, and Robinson wasn’t surprised the Toffees got a point on a day they played to their strengths while Tottenham struggled to match them physically.

And in that context the Sky Sports pundit believes the quality of Richarlison’s two “fantastic” goals cannot be overstated, particularly the fourth-minute opener.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News he said: “I’m not disappointed with the way that they ended the match, I thought they were just the second best team. I was there, working at the game.

“They didn’t like Everton’s physicality. They struggled on set plays. And at times I think Everton possibly had the better of the game, certainly in the first half.

“The two Richarlison goals, they were fantastic finishes. The first goal from him can’t be underestimated how tough the finish was, and the second was brilliant.

“But Everton played long balls and it was a tough game for Spurs because Everton made it very difficult. Their players certainly have got an identity, they’re very clear about what they do.

“The pitch hadn’t been watered in a couple of days, the grass was a bit longer, it was crusty, it was bobbly, it was difficult for Spurs to get into their passing game and wasn’t the ideal conditions for them to play they way they wanted to.

“But they’ve got to deal with that and Everton dealt with it better, putting longer balls in, playing diagonals. At every set play, every corner, every throw in, Everton looked a threat.”

Richarlison shines for Tottenham in old stomping ground at Everton

The Brazilian has taken his fair share of criticism since his £60million move from Goodison Park [Sky Sports] and often for good reason, but in the post-Harry Kane era under Postecoglou he is starting to shine.

It was a difficult afternoon on Merseyside for Tottenham as a collective but the man who used to call the place home stepped up to score his eighth and ninth goals in his past eight Premier League games.

Neither owed anything to luck and without them Spurs would have returned to London with nothing, so he deserves every bit of the credit right now as he showed why the club wouldn’t contemplate losing him at this stage.
