Real Madrid transfer mooted for Pedro Porro as Tottenham star makes exit admission

Ex-Tottenham scout Bryan King has suggested a top La Liga club could move for Pedro Porro after the right-back admitted he would like to return to Spain.

Spurs paid £40million to Sporting Lisbon for Porro in January 2023, signing him on an initial six-month loan deal which included an obligation to make the move permanent (via The Athletic, 31 January 2023).

Porro signed a five-and-a-half-year contract in North London and has been a standout performer under Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League this season, providing eight assists.

However, the 24-year-old has now admitted his desire to one day return to his home country, in an interview with El Espanol (21 March).

“In football you never know. Today you are playing there and tomorrow you can be playing somewhere else. Being Spanish, of course, I would like to come back and enjoy La Liga.

“When I played here in Primera, I enjoyed it very much and I hope one day to return, of course.”

King has suggested he is not surprised by Porro’s ambition to return to Spain.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “I think he is stating the obvious to be honest. He knows he has had a good season and speculation will accumulate around him.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the Spanish clubs who could afford him were interested, such as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

“He has had an exceptionally good season and he has demonstrated to everyone what he can do, I am surprised he hasn’t been used more by Spain this season.

“There is always speculation about players who are doing well. Ultimately, Tottenham will only let him go on their terms, he signed a contract and at the moment his focus should be on performing for his club, and then maybe one day he will get a move back to Spain.”

Could Pedro Porro quit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and life under Ange Postecoglou?

While some Spurs supporters might be surprised by Porro’s latest comments, any move is unlikely to happen this summer.

The defender is in the form of his life playing as an inverted right-back under Postecoglou and is unlikely to force a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium anytime soon.

In addition, considering how valuable he has become to the squad, Daniel Levy would likely be looking for a large fee to let Porro go, especially after paying £40million to sign him so recently.

Postecoglou won’t have to worry for now, although Porro’s admission might have ruffled a few feathers back at Hotspur Way.
