Pundit makes fresh Timo Werner admission after Tottenham showdown v Manchester United, ‘That’s just him’

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Alan Hutton has admitted that he expects Timo Werner to mess up in a Tottenham shirt every now and then following his debut against Manchester United.

The German has joined Ange Postecoglou’s ranks at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the second half of the season on loan from RB Leipzig and was thrown straight into the starting XI for Sunday’s (14 January) clash at Old Trafford.

While it was far from the perfect debut display, Werner produced a couple of bright moments and even managed to pick up the assist for Rodrigo Bentancur’s strike with a well-weighted pass into the penalty area.

But outside of that second-half pass, the 27-year-old proved to be very wasteful in the final third, failing to hit the target with any of his five shots in the game.

While Hutton was encouraged by his overall performance and expects Werner to improve, he thinks the erratic streak is a part of the German’s game.

“I think he did well,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“You look at a guy who’s come in into a club, he knows the league which obviously helps, he’s played there before which helps, but he’s had very little training with his team, very little training under his new manager and how he wants him to play.

“He’s come into a team that plays a particular brand of football that he has to kind of jump on, but I think he did well. I mean, he’s got that pace, he gets in behind teams.

The chance that he got, he got in front of goal and he kind of scuffed it a little bit. That’s just him, that’s the way that he plays at times.

“But I think for what he’s done, he literally just signed, he did well and look he’ll get better when he gets in and knows all the players and manager, he’ll get better.”

Werner will have a while to wait for his next outing in a Tottenham shirt, with Postecoglou’s side currently enjoying their winter break before a huge FA Cup fourth-round clash against Manchester City on Friday (26 January).

Hopefully, the extra week on the training field before the showdown with Pep Guardiola’s side will give the 27-year-old plenty of time to find his feet in a Spurs shirt before making his debut at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
