Postecoglou sack latest: Tottenham ‘compensation issue’ revealed

Tottenham are holding Ange Postecoglou on “thin ice” with a primary reason behind keeping him in post, according to Ian Darke.

Spurs have seen their season almost crash entirely having been knocked out of the two domestic cups within a matter of days, now relying on the Europa League for any sense of achievement.

Postecoglou’s side sit 14th in the Premier League having won eight but drawn 13 of their matches this term, with increasing pressure on both the boss and Daniel Levy.

Ange Postecoglou must rely on Europa League

Darke, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, believes European competition is why Postecoglou is still at the helm in North London.

The TV commentator has also admitted Spurs would struggle to find an adequate replacement should they decide to make a change.

Levy has the Australian on “thin ice” according to the expert, who has admitted it is difficult to gauge the chairman’s patience.

“Postecoglou is being kept in the job by the fact they’re still in Europe. There might be a compensation issue as well on the club’s side,” he said.

“But then again, it’s a difficult time to make a change anyway – who would they get? I don’t know the level of Levy’s patience with Postecoglou.

“It certainly wouldn’t have been a shock to see him gone after some of the recent games – but it seems he’s on thin ice.”

Tottenham looking to salvage season

With players beginning to return from a lengthy injury list at Tottenham, it is hard to envisage they will suffer a worse end to the season than the middle part of it.

The Lilywhites are 10 points off eighth place, which is thought to be the final Premier League spot which could realistically reach any kind of European qualification this term.

There are 14 league games remaining of the campaign plus however many Tottenham manage to accumulate in the Europa League, in which they will begin from the last 16 in the knockout phase, discovering their opponents next week.

The next block of four games is an interesting one, with Manchester United also out of sorts this season and visiting the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (16 February).

A trip to an Ipswich Town side who beat them in the reverse fixture follows before a contest against a Manchester City outfit they hammered 4-0 earlier this season, and then Spurs host an in-form Bournemouth.
