‘Postecoglou fuming’ amid Brennan Johnson controversy in Tottenham v Southampton

Ange Postecoglou is bound to be frustrated at Tottenham after Brennan Johnson was involved in a contentious moment against Southampton.

The Lilywhites secured a much-needed 3-1 win on Sunday (6 April) as the Wales international scored a brace in North London.

This was Spurs’ first Premier League win since February, but still resulted in controversy and ill-feeling at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This came as Mathys Tel scored from the penalty spot with 96 minutes on the clock in a frustrating moment for the home side.

Postecoglou left unhappy by Tel moment v Southampton

There is no doubt that Postecoglou is coming under pressure in N17, and that tension appears to be reflecting on his players.

This saw Bayern Munich loanee Tel take the ball from Johnson for the penalty despite the 23-year-old being one goal from a hattrick.

The Welshman did make that point to the 19-year-old but he wasn’t for budging as he went on to convert the spot-kick past Aaron Ramsdale.

This hasn’t gone down well with former Brentford and Leicester City manager Martin Allen, who believes Postecoglou will be unhappy by the forward’s decision.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Allen said: “If their designated penalty taker was Brennan Johnson, and he took it off him, I don’t think Postecoglou will be very happy.

I can’t imagine Johnson would be happy with it, either. We don’t know if Tel was told he could take the penalty, but something clearly isn’t right there.

The dynamic and the chemistry with the whole club and group doesn’t seem to be right, and there seems to be a lot going on behind the scenes.

There’s a lot of negativity around the place. They haven’t had a good season, and that hasn’t helped matters.

Tel should have given Johnson penalty v Southampton

With all the issues that have surrounded Spurs this season, the North Londoners really didn’t need any additional controversy this campaign.

They weren’t able to avoid that against bottom side, Southampton, as Tel added to the idea of a toxic dressing room in N17.

The Frenchman has failed to impress since joining on loan and has managed to ruin the moment of his first Premier League goal.

Johnson should have been given the spot-kick and allowed the chance to net a hattrick, something which would have done wonders for his confidence.
