Nottingham Forest FFP development to help Tottenham secure £30m Morgan Gibbs-White transfer

Tottenham may be able to bring Morgan Gibbs-White to North London this summer on a cut-price deal after the latest financial fair play development at the City Ground, according to Alan Hutton.

Reports emerged in March that Ange Postecoglou’s side had moved into pole position to sign the England youth international this summer having been impressed with his performances for Nottingham Forest this season [Football Insider, 26 March].

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side has also been hit with a point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules and could now be facing relegation from the top flight if their appeal is unsuccessful.

While Hutton doesn’t believe the 24-year-old would be a regular starter under Postecoglou in North London, he thinks Gibbs-White would be an able deputy for James Maddison for around £30million.

“You saw what happened with Brennan Johnson,” Hutton Tottenham News.

“They weren’t willing to sell him early to cover the FFP situation. They held out for more money and eventually, he went to Tottenham for £50million. Whether you think that’s right or wrong, Morgan Gibbs-White has been a standout player for them this season, their go-to guy.

“I don’t know how much they paid for him, I think it was a lot of money so they’ll get looking to get more back in than what they’ve shelled out because you’ve seen that he can come in and be a really decent player moving forward for your team.

“Does he come into Tottenham and play every single week? Probably not when you’ve got the likes of Maddison and these guys in that sort of area, it is obviously going to be difficult.

“But they need back-up, they need somebody who is going to push these players on so for £30million-plus, I’d have thought it’s going to be around about that mark.”

Will Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sign Morgan Gibbs-White this summer?

While Maddison has been superb since arriving at Spurs, the England international has struggled with injury throughout his career and cannot be relied upon to play week in and week out, especially if Tottenham qualify for the Champions League.

For a reasonable fee, Gibbs-White could come in and share the load with Maddison and that deal could be completed for even less money if Forest have to balance their books to avoid further FFP punishment.

This deal could entirely depend on whether or not Espirito Santo’s side manages to stay in the Premier League as it would likely become a much easier transfer to complete if Forest drop into the Championship.
