Morgan Gibbs-White ‘would fit’ under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham after January transfer news at Nottingham Forest

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Morgan Gibbs-White would be “fantastic” signing for Tottenham if they could get it done but it would be difficult in January, according to Paul Robinson.

The Daily Mail reported on New Year’s Eve (31 December) that Spurs had watched the Nottingham Forest attacker in his match-winning display against Manchester United the day before, as they eyed him up as a potential transfer target.

Robinson feels there are many similarities between Gibbs-White and current Tottenham star James Maddison, so feels the former “would fit” into Ange Postecoglou’s style.

While the ex-England keeper says it cannot be entirely ruled out that the 23-year-old could become available, given he is now managed by his former boss Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest, it is unlikely.

The former Spurs manager sold Gibbs-White when they were both at Wolves, where the pair weren’t thought to have a great relationship [The Athletic, 22 December].

Talking to Tottenham News Robinson exclusively said: “He’s a very similar player to James Maddison in that way. He’s playing in the number 10 role at Forest.

“It’d be a fantastic deal for the club to get done. I can’t see it being done in January, looking at where Forest are, what Nuno’s doing with them at the moment, they seem to have turned a corner.

“Morgan Gibbs-White has been a huge part of that with his goals, his assists, playing tucked in with a little bit more of a free role, off the left hand side sometimes.

“He’s a player that can play in behind the striker or even as a deep-lying midfielder, but in a way he’s very similar to James Maddison.

“Never rule a deal out because Nuno’s sold him before at Wolves, he let the player go, but at the moment I think it would be very difficult to do because of where Forest are and how much they are reliant upon him.

“I can’t see Forest being willing to do business at this stage of the season but he would fit the Ange mould of an attacking player.”

Tottenham also signed Brennan Johnson from Forest earlier this season. He joined on deadline day (1 September) for £47million.
