John Wenham wants ‘fearless’ Djed Spence to be given chance at Tottenham amid exit rumours
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
Djed Spence needs the chance to “play into form” at Tottenham and should be loaned out to another Premier League club if this is not going to happen, rather than being sold, according to John Wenham.
As reported by Sky Sports News (8 August, 02:50pm), Tottenham are willing to listen to offers for right-back Spence, who they signed from Championship club Middlesbrough just last summer in a deal worth up to £20million.
The 22-year-old did not adapt well to life at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under Antonio Conte and was therefore sent out on loan in January to French side Rennes, where he spent the second half of the season.

Wenham doesn’t believe Spence should be sold and wants to see him be given one of the two right-back spots as he believes the former Nottingham Forest loanee has all the “characteristics” to succeed.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Djed Spence was somebody I was incredibly excited to get, a signing that ticked all the boxes, pacey, powerful, homegrown, Championship experience, fast and fearless, but it again appears that this is another manager who hasn’t really wanted him for whatever reason.
“It’s vital that we get Spence a Premier League loan this year if Emerson Royal and Pedro Porro are going to be the two right-backs this season.
“Let’s get on the phone to a Burnley or a Bournemouth and just make sure that he gets 30 to 35 Premier League games under his belt.

“I think he can be an outstanding prospect and we need to get him the opportunities to play as he is somebody that I hope in the future can be a starting right back for Tottenham and also England.
“If I was going to be the manager of Tottenham, I would personally look to sell Royal and have Porro and Spence as the two right-backs for the season.
“I think with Spence you have just got to play him into form. We need homegrown, English players in the squad, and I think Spence has all the characteristics, he just needs the opportunities to show it.”
