John Wenham: Tottenham must do ‘everything in their power’ to move Eric Dier on

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes Tottenham must now do “everything in their power” to move Eric Dier on from the club during January, with the defender’s contract set to expire next summer.

Dier is yet to feature for Spurs this season and is clearly not a part of Ange Postecoglou’s long-term plans.

The 30-year-old has been linked with various moves away in recent months [BILD] as he now finds himself in the final year of his Tottenham contract.

With this in mind, Wenham believes that Spurs must now make the sale of Dier a priority as the January transfer window approaches.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “At the end of the day, Dier is currently not contributing at all. His contract is set to expire next summer, so if Tottenham are to have any chance of getting any sort of fee for him, January will be the perfect time to move him on.

“I think Dier will go back to Sporting Lisbon, rather than Bayern Munich. Last summer, he trained at their facilities, and he just seems to have a very good relationship with the people at the club.

“That would be a great move for him, playing Champions League football for a team that competes near the top of their league, in a nice city as well.

“I’ve always thought the fact that Dier doesn’t count as one of the homegrown players is a real negative against him, and I think Spurs should now be doing everything in their power to move him on.

“Having said that, if they were to move him on, they would need to bring in a replacement.

“If they can get that done, then it would mark a complete rebuild of the defence in such a short space of time, and only Cristian Romero would remain from last season’s six centre-back options, with Ben Davies now the backup left back.”

In other Tottenham news, another forgotten player at the club has been linked with a move away from north London.
