John Wenham says FA Cup must be ‘priority’ for Tottenham after ‘depressing’ Carabao Cup exit
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
The FA Cup must now be a “complete priority” for Tottenham after they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup in “depressing” fashion, according to John Wenham.
Due to not having any European commitments this season, Spurs entered the Carabao Cup during the second round and were handed a tricky draw away to Premier League rivals Fulham.
Ange Postecoglou decided to make wholesale changes for the match on Tuesday 29 August and paid the price as his side were eliminated via a penalty shoot-out, after Davinson Sanchez, who has since left the club to join Galatasaray, missed his spot kick.

Wenham believes that due to the importance of winning a trophy, the FA Cup is now very important to the club.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Our draw in the Carabao Cup was also an incredibly difficult draw. To have actually got a Premier League team, away from home, with the options that were there was incredibly unlucky.
“However, moving on to the FA Cup, that now has to be a complete priority for the club. Obviously, we enter at the third-round stage, and we could do with a bit of luck in the draw as well, but that’s got to be a priority for us.
“The Carabao Cup to me was just as important, we had to win a trophy and to have lost one of the two chances already, is so depressing. I think that the wholesale changes are just completely unnecessary with the lack of other games we’ve got this season.

“And those lack of games could benefit us in the league as well, of course. A lot of people were downplaying Tottenham this year, but not having European football when 40 per cent of the league does is going to be absolutely massive, especially when playing this high-intensity system.
“We’ve got a week’s rest every single time and I can just see Tottenham grinding out a lot of points this season.”
