John Wenham praises Tottenham Under-21s after ‘favourite result of the season’

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham has described Tottenham Under-21s’ most recent victory, a 2-1 win away at Bristol City in the Premier League Cup on Monday (9 October), as their “result of the season.”

Spurs were without several key players for the fixture with the likes of Jamie Donley, Alfie Dorrington and Ashley Phillips all away on international duty.

Nonetheless, the fringe players stepped up and earned a 2-1 victory against the Robins, coming from behind to win the game thanks to an equaliser from Maxwell McKnight and a 95th-minute Jude Soonsup-Bell penalty.

It ensured the North London youngsters maintained their perfect start to the season, which sees them with nine wins out of nine, and Wenham believes this result stood out above the rest, considering the circumstances.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “That was probably my favourite result of the season for the Under-21s.

“You had Aaron Maguire, the third-choice goalkeeper at that level, come in and make some massive stops towards the end of the game.

“Dante Cassanova and McKnight were both yet to start a game this season and both came in and did well, McKnight playing in a more advanced midfield position and popping up with a really good goal.

“Then it was over to the star players this season to win the game as Yago Santiago earned a penalty, which Soonsup-Bell dispatched late on in stoppage time.

“Before that game, I would have taken a draw to keep the unbeaten run going considering we were missing six genuine first-team starters in that team, but for the other players to step up and put in a performance like that, it will just keep the squad morale so high and keep that winning belief in the side.

“Really proud of them and as I said for me it was the result of the season for that age group because of who they were missing and the fact that others stepped up and didn’t let the side down. A phenomenal achievement.”

In other Tottenham news, the club will be worse off when they return to Premier League action against Fulham as a result of one notable absentee.
