John Wenham is hopeful ‘impressive’ Tottenham youngster Yago Santiago can secure a loan

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Yago Santiago has made a sensational start to the season with the Tottenham Under-21s, after he could have been “released” just last summer, according to John Wenham.

Spurs’ Under-21s have won their opening two matches of the Premier League Two season, recording a 5-0 victory away at Manchester City and a 4-1 win at home to Newcastle.

One player who has impressed during those matches is 20-year-old Santiago, who has scored four times across both games, grabbing a brace in each match.

And Wenham is delighted to see the form he is in after he expected him to leave the club not long ago and is hopeful that he is one of multiple Under-21 stars who can secure loan switches.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “A player that’s of interest is Yago Santiago. He’s somebody if I’m being brutally honest, that I expected to be released last summer.

“He was rewarded with a new two-year deal, much to my surprise, and he seems to have just started the season in a flurry.

“I know he was heavily involved in a couple of behind-closed-doors preseason games, trained with the first team a little bit, and to start the season with four goals is really impressive.

“Two very good goals in the match against Manchester City as well. He picked up the ball out wide, beat two or three people and bent it into the top corner. That was very, very impressive.

“I think a lot of the Under-21 players will be looking to impress visiting scouts and secure some good loan moves.

“I hope that Tottenham can get six or seven loan moves sorted before the window closes because just playing Premier League Two and Premier League International Cup fixtures will not be enough game time for their development at a vital stage when they need to be out playing.
