John Wenham believes Tottenham will ‘push’ to sign Lloyd Kelly in January

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Tottenham will “push” to sign Bournemouth centre-back Lloyd Kelly during the January transfer window, according to John Wenham.

An injury to Micky van de Ven has left Ange Postecoglou’s side short at the back and the Australian will be hoping this is something the club addresses in January.

According to a report last week in the Evening Standard (9 November), that is exactly what Spurs plan to do, as they will reportedly target a left-sided centre-back during January, with Kelly expected to be a target.

And Wenham believes that the Bournemouth man could be exactly what the club needs.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I certainly think a left-sided centre-back has to be signed in January, and I believe that Kelly does fit the bill.

“He has the ability, he can cover at left-back, he only has six months left on his contract at this point, he is a homegrown player with Premier League experience, and he has captained Bournemouth on a few occasions.

“He is 25 years old which is a good age to make this move and a switch to Tottenham probably sees him get involved in the England setup as well in my opinion.

“I think he is one that Spurs will push for.

“I’m aware that there is interest from AC Milan who can offer him a pre-contract, which Tottenham cannot do, so they’ve got the upper hand in terms of being able to negotiate with him first and not needing to agree a fee with Bournemouth.

“I just think a centre-back will be the starting point in January and for obvious reasons, Kelly makes the most sense.”

In other Tottenham news, one player could be on his way out with a Premier League rival ready to table a fresh offer.
