John Wenham believes it is time for Tottenham to ‘cut their losses’ with Tanguy Ndombele

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Tanguy Ndombele has missed the opportunity to “establish himself” during pre-season and must now “move on” from Tottenham, according to John Wenham.

Perhaps Daniel Levy’s biggest regret as Spurs chairman was sanctioning a move to bring Ndombele to North London in the summer of 2019 for a club-record fee of £63million (Sky Sports News, 2 July 2019).

It is a move that just hasn’t worked out for either party with the midfielder heading out on loan twice during his stay at Hotspur Way and making just 91 appearances across all competitions over a four-year period for the Premier League club.

As previously reported by the Daily Mail (3 August), Turkish side Galatasaray are interested in a move for the Frenchman and Wenham believes now is the time for all parties to sever ties.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I think at the start of summer there was an opportunity for either him or Giovani Lo Celso to establish themselves in this squad.

“Unfortunately for Ndombele, he picked up this injury the night before the West Ham friendly, which according to reports from Alasdair Gold he was set to start.

“He’s subsequently recovered, but Lo Celso in the meantime has scored twice and looked very good, and with the squad numbers we’ve got, we can’t keep everybody.

“If there is a genuine offer on the table, regardless of what it is, the offer to take his £200,000 weekly wage away from the club, I can guarantee you Tottenham will take that.

“It has just never worked out for Ndombele at Tottenham, he has spent 18 months now of his five-year contract on loan, he’s on huge money, the same as Harry Kane, and for what you see on the pitch it just isn’t worth it.

“I think for all concerned it is best if Tottenham cut their losses this summer and he does move on.”

In other Tottenham news, Wenham believes another transfer-listed player deserves a second chance at the club.
