James Maddison fitness worry emerges as Tottenham star could be benched v Chelsea

Bryan King believes Ange Postecoglou could opt to leave James Maddison on the Tottenham bench against Chelsea.

The ex-Spurs scout feels that the England international has been “disappointing” as of late.

Tottenham will travel to Stamford Bridge on Thursday (2 May) where they will be looking to put their 3-2 defeat to Arsenal (28 April) behind them.

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes a decision needs to be made on Maddison.

“He was disappointing against Arsenal, but I think he has been disappointing for a while now, to be honest,” King said.

“I sometimes watch him play and wonder whether he is 100 per cent fit because he doesn’t look like he is, he has looked very ordinary.

“He hasn’t been producing anywhere near the levels he was at the beginning of the season.

“Perhaps Postecoglou would be wise to leave him out, I think it would shake him up a little bit and help him finish the season in the right way.”

James Maddison must rediscover his form at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou

It could be argued that Maddison hasn’t produced in a Tottenham shirt since October.

After spending a couple of months out nursing an ankle injury, the midfielder has looked a shadow of himself since his return in January.

James Maddison has struggled in a Tottenham shirt as of late.

While some supporters might suggest that playing him back into form would be the best course of action, it feels as if Postecoglou has already tried that.

Now might be the time for the Australian to try a much tougher approach, starting against Chelsea on Thursday night.
