Tottenham: Shock emerges as Fabrizio Romano shares latest Timo Werner transfer update at Spurs

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Alan Hutton admits Timo Werner isn’t as good as Son Heung-min but he can still understand why Tottenham are signing the Germany forward from RB Leipzig.

Son, 31, is set to miss all of January – and potentially a good chunk of February – if South Korea do what they’re expected to do and go far in the AFC Asian Cup, which is being held in Qatar this winter.

Ange Postecoglou’s squad is severely hampered by injuries and international call-ups this month with the Africa Cup of Nations also underway.

As a result, the Aussie is seeking reinforcements and former Chelsea attacker Werner is reportedly closing in on a move to North London.

Fabrizio Romano reported via his Twitter account on Tuesday (9 January) that Werner is on his way to Tottenham to undergo a medical and complete a loan switch from RB Leipzig.

It is understood that Spurs will possess the option to buy Werner permanently for £14.6million (€17m) with Romano adding that “all documents are ready and set to be signed between Spurs and RB Leipzig”.

Although the news took Hutton by surprise, he can see why Postecoglou would want Werner despite him struggling in his spell at Chelsea.

When asked if he was “shocked” by the news, Hutton told Tottenham News: “I was. It came from nowhere.

I get it, I understand. He’s a player who can play out wide and in a number of positions. He cuts in like Son, who’s away with South Korea at the moment.

Tottenham are looking for reinforcements so I get it, Werner knows the league and he’s played for a team under pressure.

He’s not a Son – he gets one chance and scores. Werner isn’t that, he needs four or five opportunities but he’s got pace, he’s got something a bit different and he’ll add something to that squad.

“But it looks very close to happening and hopefully, he can hit the ground running.”

Werner played for Chelsea between 2020 and 2022 but only managed to score 23 times in 89 appearances across all competitions before being sold back to RB Leipzig.

Since returning to Germany, Werner’s form has failed to improve and this season, the Germany international has scored just twice in only 14 appearances across all competitions. He’s also only started twice in the Bundesliga.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs have been made to look like fools with an update coming from a financial expert.
