Finance Expert makes brutal Tottenham admission after alien agreement

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Tottenham have to be praised for taking the first steps and becoming partners with Fanblock to offer unique opportunities for fans.

Tottenham announced the agreement on 6 December which allows fans to own blocks of the digital pitch and earn points with prizes available such as VIP tickets and signed merchandise.

The finance expert admitted brutally that if fans will buy things, the clubs will sell them despite it being described as “Alien” to traditional football fans.

“That’s exactly it,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“It’s absolutely another play into a different area and a different market, that kind of wider tech trend and how it may disrupt sports in the future is absolutely part of this play.

There is no real benchmark for success on it because there are very few clubs that are looking into this at the minute, it could be something that potentially takes off in the future if you can get the leverage right and the marketing.

You can see the proposition, and the reality of it is, that people will talk about it being a strange move given all the things we’ve seen around this space with crypto and NFTs and the metaverse, but the reality is that is where the world is heading in many respects.

I think, strip it back being brutally honest, if someone is willing to pay for it, then the club will charge and if it does take off and whoever buys these, if it does work then the revenue potential is there.

I can understand any calls for it being a strange one at the minute, but it fits with the narrative of where we’re going into this digital world.

The club again, first-mover advantage, taking ownership of that, if it works great, if it doesn’t at least they tried it so I think we have to credit Spurs in that sense.

It’s just alien to the traditional football fan, but it’s not about them anymore, it’s about people who engage with the club and as I say, if people will buy it you can guarantee the clubs will sell it.”
