Doctor issues injury caution as Tottenham call up Alfie Dorrington to senior squad

We’re delighted to welcome injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the injury situation at Tottenham Hotspur...

The Tottenham medical staff will be cautious with Alfie Dorrington to acclimatise him to senior football, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert claims that first-team football is a different ball game altogether and the teenager may be put at risk if he’s thrown straight into the deep end.

Hotspur HQ reported on 14 December that the 18-year-old could soon make his Premier League debut after being called up to the senior side.

Ange Postecoglou

Discussing the state of play with Dorrington exclusively with Tottenham News, Dr Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist, said:

The main key will be to avoid any injuries due to the intensity of the senior game.

Allowing him to acclimate gradually to the intensity and managing his minutes will be important for the Spurs medical staff.

Outside of that, his strength and conditioning program will likely already have been building progressively to get him ready for tougher minutes.

Micky van de Ven, Ashley Phillips and Cristian Romero are all injured, thus reducing Ange Postecoglou’s options at centre-back.

Emerson Royal, who is a full-back, is being forced to play at centre-back because of the lack of depth.

Romero might be out but his setback is not understood to be a long term one but his discipline has come into question.

It remains to be seen whether or not Dorrington makes his Premier League debut this season.

In other Tottenham Hotspur news, a player is mooted to have suffered a setback in his rehabilitation and now may be out for longer than first expected.
