Daniel Levy told Tottenham ‘need to’ complete striker transfer after fresh Timo Werner update

Alan Hutton has told Daniel Levy that Tottenham “need to” sign a striker this summer after confirming the return of Timo Werner.

The Lilywhites announced on Tuesday (28 May) that the German international would be returning to North London for a second loan spell, with Spurs holding the option to make his stay permanent next summer.

Werner had a mixed first six months under Ange Postecoglou, scoring twice and laying on three assits for his teammates in just 10 Premier League starts, but he was repeatedly criticised for his erratic finishing in the penalty area.

Although Hutton believes the 28-year-old will add some much-needed depth to the attack ahead of next season, he doesn’t think he will be a regular starter and has urged Spurs to enter the market for a more consistent centre-forward.

“I’m a little bit on the fence with this one,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I think the way that he came in was perfect, they had some injury issues as he was a guy that can give you something but the end product for me is just not quite there and I think that’s been the issue at every club he’s played for.

“He’s got that pace, he’s got that willingness to always run at fullbacks, he will always give you that but the end of product needs to get better.

“In terms of him being part of the squad, I think he gives you options so strength in depth will be there. I think that is a good signing for Tottenham in that case, but I don’t think he will be a regular starter.

“If they get a striker in, which I think they need to, somebody like Dominic Solanke or Ivan Toney to play that number nine role. Son will then move back over to the position that I think he’s best in and you’ve then got a squad player in Werner who can come in and make something happen.

“So I think it will work out well for them.”

Will Tottenham sign a new striker after Timo Werner transfer announcement?

The summer window hasn’t even opened yet but Spurs have already been linked with a variety of different strikers after Postecoglou admitted he wanted to freshen up his forward options ahead of next season.

Speculation has continued to swirl around Richarlison’s long-term future, with some suggesting he could leave Tottenham this summer and as Hutton suggests, Werner has shown he isn’t consistent enough to score regularly.

While Son Heung-min had a reasonable season whilst playing primarily as a centre-forward, he has been mre effective throughout his career when cutting inside from the left flank.

Hopefully, Daniel Levy and Postecoglou will listen to Hutton’s pleas and find a new number nine ahead of the start of next season. A consistent goalscorer could be the difference between qualifying and missing out on the Champions League.
