Cristian Romero ‘to leave Tottenham’ after £50m David Ornstein transfer news

Cristian Romero is expected to seal a Tottenham exit this summer, after David Ornstein provided a transfer update.

Romero has missed much of the campaign through injury, which led to the defender aiming a subtle dig at the Tottenham medical staff.

Since returning to action, the World Cup winner has been a mainstay in Ange Postecoglou’s side. However, with two years left on his deal this summer, it now seems like the perfect time for Romero and Spurs to part ways, and that is exactly what is expected to happen.

David Ornstein’s update ‘confirms Romero exit from Tottenham’

Should he decide to leave Tottenham, Romero won’t be short of potential destinations, with a move to Atletico Madrid firmly on the cards.

Romero has already spoken to Diego Simeone on the phone and is excited about the prospect of joining the Spanish club [Sacha Tavolieri].

And a recent update from Ornstein seems to suggest that Spurs are already planning for the centre-back’s departure.

The Athletic journalist reported on Thursday (10 April) that Tottenham have held talks with Dean Huijsen’s representatives.

Bournemouth and the player, who has a £50million release clause, are keen for a swift decision.

And Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that Spurs’ interest suggests that Romero is off.

“It confirms that Romero is probably off this summer,” Wenham said.

“The fact that Tottenham are lining up another top-level centre-back suggests that they are preparing for Romero to leave the club.

“However, whether we would be able to sign Huijsen is another story. We would probably be his 10th or 11th choice, way down the pecking order.”

Huijsen would be a brilliant addition at Tottenham

If Romero does leave, Tottenham need to make a high-profile signing to replace the 26-year-old.

Huijsen would certainly tick a lot of boxes and would be an exciting addition for the present and future. However, whether he would pick Tottenham remains to be seen.
