Conor Gallagher ‘great fit’ for Tottenham as controversial Chelsea transfer backed
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
Conor Gallagher would be a “great fit” for Tottenham “but it won’t happen” because the club doesn’t do business with Chelsea, says Paul Robinson.
The English midfielder is again being touted for a move away from Stamford Bridge in the January, despite being a favourite of Mauricio Pochettino and having captained the Blues regularly this term, with Spurs reported to be interested in a deal if he’s available [Daily Mail, 11 December].
Robinson feels it could be a controversial move initially among the fanbase because of the Chelsea links but, despite the 23-year-old being the right fit for Ange Postecoglou’s style of play and help needed with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr both due to head out for the Africa Cup of Nations, predicts it will be out of reach.

He exclusively told Tottenham News: “I think that he’d be a great fit for Spurs the way that he is. He’s a combative, box-to-box midfielder. But it won’t happen.
“The two clubs don’t do business. Historically they don’t do business. I know Chelsea want to sell, they’re looking to trim the squad.
“Gallagher’s played a big part in what Pochettino’s done so far. I think they’d be reluctant to sell, in fact I’d be almost adamant that they won’t sell to Tottenham. The club’s just don’t do deals.
“The way that Ange has put his team together, the way that Tottenham play, Gallagher’s the type of player who would fit into that.
“How Spurs fans would feel about that I’m not so sure. I’m not so sure it would be a signing that went down particularly well immediately.
“If you look past the club rivalry you can see the quality of the player [it would], but like I say, those clubs don’t do business.”

Under the previous Roman Abramovich regime at Chelsea this move would probably be dead in the water already from a Tottenham perspective, but with Todd Boehly in charge nothing can be ruled out.
Pochettino doesn’t look like he wants to lose the England international so for a transfer to be in the offing at all suggests the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge are prepared to go against the grain.
And if Spurs managed to weaken their London rivals, and strike a blow against their former boss, in order to provide their current one with a potentially crucial new signing the supporters would surely get on board pretty quickly, so if the door is open it certainly seems like one worth pushing for.
In other Tottenham news, the club are expected to go into the transfer market to bolster their attack in January amid worry over one ace.
