Chelsea ready to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Tottenham in new rival transfer

Chelsea could be willing to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Tottenham this summer to ensure they remain compliant with PSR rules, according to Alan Hutton.

The 24-year-old had a mixed season at Stamford Bridge, only making 13 Premier League appearances under Mauricio Pochettinho with reports suggesting he could be a homegrown player sold this summer to balance the books [The Independent, 30 May].

While several Premier League clubs have been credited with an interest in the versatile defender this summer, journalists have suggested that the Blues star fits the sort of profile Ange Postecoglou is looking to sign [GiveMeSport, 28 May].

Although Hutton believes Enzo Maresca’s side would be willing to hold talks with the Lilywhites when the transfer window opens, he isn’t convinced that Chalobah would be interested in making the move to a London rival.

“Over the past few years moves from rival to rival don’t seem to happen as much,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“Especially when they’re battling each other, I know Tottenham finished higher this season but in terms of moving forward, they are rivals so it is always a difficult one to move across that boundary.

“That being said, if Chelsea are in a situation where they have to get rid of players to adhere to FFP, it could be a situation where they would be willing to let him go.

“From Chalobah’s point of view, he needs to go to a team where he is going to play regularly, there is no point in going to another side where you’re going to be a squad player.

“Ultimately, that could possibly be the case at Spurs so it will be an interesting one and a big decision for him.”

Will Tottenham and Daniel Levy sign Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea in the summer transfer window?

Spurs could do with one or two defensive additions this summer because at this moment in time, Postecoglou remains rather reliant on both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero to start and perform week in and week out.

Although Radu Dragusin was signed in January to provide some further depth, he has struggled to hit the heights expected of him in the Premier League, with some even suggesting he could already leave this summer.

Chalobah would be the perfect player to fill that void given his combination of experience and versatility, but he will want to be playing regular first-team football and while Van de Ven and Romero are fit, that just won’t happen.

Maybe a deal could still be reached between the two parties, but at this moment in time, a summer move doesn’t seem particularly likely.
