Bryan Gil will ‘regret’ Tottenham January transfer decision as Ange Postecoglou stance emerges

Bryan Gil may “regret” his decision not to leave Tottenham on loan during the January transfer window due to a lack of regular first-team football, according to Alan Hutton.

The Spanish winger had plenty of interest throughout the January transfer window, with clubs both in the Premier League and abroad understood to hold an interest in securing his services on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

Both Brighton and Nottingham Forest were reportedly interested in signing Gil [Daily Mail, 30 January] and Spurs were willing to let the 23-year-old leave North London in the final days of the January window, but he decided to remain with Ange Postecoglou’s side until the end of the season.

Hutton has admitted that he is a big fan of the Spaniard’s technical style of play, but doesn’t think he will play regularly for Postecoglou given the sheer number of alternative options available to the Australian currently.

“Possibly, he might regret not going,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I think he will get minutes but there are a lot of players ahead of him at this moment in time. I really like him as a player I must be honest, I think technically he’s very gifted and he can really make something happen out of nothing.

“But I just think there are too many people ahead of him at this moment in time, so unless there are injuries I don’t know exactly how much game time he’ll get.

“So he might have missed something there by not going out on loan.”

Bryan Gil down Ange Postecoglou’s pecking order at Tottenham

Since arriving in the Premier League, Gil has struggled to adapt to the English game and is still waiting for his first league goal in the competition. His technical, lightweight approach has seen him rooted to the bench for much of his time at Spurs.

This season hasn’t been much different, with Postecoglou only starting the 23-year-old twice in the league and only opting to introduce him from the bench on rare occasions. It is clear that he is now a spare part at Tottenham.

With Son Heung-Min back from the Asian Cup and Timo Werner impressing during the early stages of his Spurs career, the quality of options is only increasing and it now seems even more unlikely that Gil will force his way into the starting XI regularly.
