Bryan Gil must complete last-minute Tottenham exit as Brighton January transfer talks emerge

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Alan Hutton admits that Bryan Gil has to leave Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window after interest emerged from within the Premier League in the Spurs outcast.

Reports have emerged that Brighton have opened talks with Spurs over a potential loan deal for the Spanish midfielder until the end of the season, with Nottingham Forest also keen on bringing him to the City Ground this month [Daily Mail, 30 January].

Gil has been allowed to leave North London in the final days of the January window, with Fiorentina joining the Premier League clubs in holding an interest in securing his service before Thursday (1 September) night’s transfer deadline.

Hutton isn’t convinced that the 22-year-old’s lightweight and technical style is suited to the Premier League, but does think that his skillset would help him thrive in either La Liga or the Serie A.

“He’s another technically gifted player, but it’s not worked out at Tottenham,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I think just the style of football that he plays, he’s quite lightweight and he’s not that Premier League hardened if you want, but as I said he’s a very technical player.

“He would fit in in the Spanish League or Italy. I am a little bit surprised that he hasn’t moved on because he needs more game time. In recent weeks he has come on, he has started the odd game here or there, but throughout the course of the season, he probably hasn’t played anywhere near as much as he’d like.

“I’d thought towards the start of this month that he’d probably go out on loan with a view of a permanent but again, we’ll see in the coming days.”

Having spent the second half of last season on loan with Sevilla, Gil has found regular football hard to come by under Ange Postecoglou, only starting two Premier League games this term and failing to score or assist in any of his 10 appearances in all competitions.

It seems that Tottenham are more than willing to allow him to leave in the final stages of the January window, the only question that now remains is whether he will stay in the Premier League or once again look to ply his trade in Europe.
