Brentford 0-2 Tottenham: PGMOL slammed over incident as Liverpool example raised

Keith Hackett has criticised the PGMOL over an “inconsistent approach” on penalty decisions after Tottenham were denied a spot-kick in the win against Brentford.

Spurs prevailed 2-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday (2 February) to ease the growing pressure on boss Ange Postecoglou.

Shortly after a Vitaly Janelt own goal had given the visitors the lead, Mikey Moore was shoved over inside the box by Nathan Collins.

While former FIFA referee Hackett believes referee Jarred Gillett was correct not to point to the spot, he raised the example from 24 hours earlier when Liverpool were awarded a pen against Bournemouth.

“There is an inconsistent approach on penalty decisions,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

The PGMOL have defended the award of a penalty kick in the Liverpool game. The PGMOL have defended the decision, saying that contact was slight.

Here we see a clear hands on an opponent not penalised. I would not award a penalty kick in either case.”

Tottenham pick up massive win against Brentford

Gillett’s decision not to award Moore a penalty ultimately did not matter all that much as Pape Matar Sarr went on to add a late second for Spurs.

Tottenham showed great grit and determination to come away with all three points against London rivals Brentford.

Postecoglou will be a relieved man and now all focus can turn to the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.

As for the Moore incident, while many Tottenham fans would have been screaming for a penalty, these are decisions in which it seems a flip of the coin will decide whether a pen is awarded or not.
