Bentancur ‘to follow in Romero footsteps’ amid Tottenham exit news

Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur’s Tottenham futures are understood to be closely linked.

Tottenham might already be preparing for life without Romero, whose exit could bring the Lilywhites relief in more ways than one.

The centre-back has been widely linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, as Diego Simeone is a long-time admirer of the Spurs defender. However, Romero’s exit could have a domino effect at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bentancur ‘could leave Tottenham if Romero departs’

Bentancur’s Tottenham future is up in the air, with the midfielder also linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.

The future of several Spurs players are expected to hinge on one another as the summer transfer window unfolds, with suggestions that Romero and Bentancur could be tempted to remain in North London if captain Son Heung-min departs.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that if Romero does leave, Bentancur will soon follow him.

“I think Bentancur’s future is tightly linked to Romero,” Wenham said.

“We’ve seen them both linked to Atletico Madrid. They’re incredibly good friends off the pitch, as well as on the pitch. You can see that by the way they enter matchdays together.

“Their partners are very good friends, and they’ve both got young children too. I think their futures are intertwined. If one stays, they both stay, and if one goes, they both go. We’ll have to watch this space.”

Tottenham must convince Bentancur to stay

While the Tottenham midfielder has endured his fair share of injuries over the years, he became a significant figure in Spurs’ winning the UEFA Europa League this season.

He was relentless in Bilbao and, along with Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma, and the Tottenham defence, limited United to few opportunities.

The match provided a taste of the future of Spurs’ midfield if Ange Postecoglou remains in charge, and with UEFA Champions League football secured, North London is not quite finished with Bentancur yet.
