Aston Villa: Lawyer explains how completely derailed Unai Emery’s men are in battle v Tottenham

John Wenham believes that John McGinn’s suspension could “derail” Aston Villa in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification, which would benefit Tottenham.

Spurs are just two points behind Villa and the Premier League top-four with a game in hand after their 4-0 win against Unai Emery’s side at Villa Park on Sunday (10 March).

As well as losing the match, Villa lost one of their most influential players from this season, McGinn, after the Scotland international was sent off for a reckless tackle on Destiny Udogie in the 65th minute.

McGinn will now miss the next three Premier League matches, and Wenham believes this will greatly impact who finishes in the top four.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, a Litigation Lawyer with over 10 years of experience in the legal field, said: “Losing McGinn for three games could completely derail Villa.

“They’ve only got 10 Premier League games left this season, so for McGinn to be unavailable for three of them, as the captain of the club and a vitally important player who often goes under the radar, will be so disappointing to them.

“Villa find themselves in a tough position now.

“If this does derail them, Tottenham will be the ones that will capitalise on that.”

Tottenham must take advantage of Aston Villa’s struggles and qualify for the UEFA Champions League

Ange Postecoglou’s side are in a great position to make a return to Europe’s elite competition next season.

McGinn has been a standout performer for Emery this season, and he will now miss the trip to West Ham (17 March), the visit of Wolves (30 March) and a clash with Manchester City at the Etihad (3 April).

These are three teams who are all in the top half of the Premier League and Villa might therefore find things difficult without their captain in these games.

As well as the absence of McGinn, Villa must also consider their European ambitions, with the second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League Round of 16 clash to come against Ajax at Villa Park on Thursday (14 March).

Archie Gray could feature frequently under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham this season

There is a lot on Emery’s plate, while Postecoglou just has 11 Premier League matches to think about, and the Australian must take advantage of this clear run by leading Tottenham back to the Champions League.

In other Tottenham news, Wenham believes one heavily criticised Spurs star had his best game for the club against Villa.
