Arsenal ‘given green light’ to use Tottenham footage in new appeal

Arsenal “have every right” to use footage from Manchester United against Tottenham in their Lewis Myles-Skelly red card appeal, according to Keith Hackett.

The Daily Mail reported on Monday (27 January) that Arsenal would look to use the red card awarded to Bruno Fernandes in September’s fixture, and later overturned, as part of their appeal.

In the view of former FIFA referee Hackett, that is a decision that would make sense.

They have every right to show similar challenges like the Fernandes one,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

I would default to the challenge being, at worse, reckless, for which the sanction is a yellow card.

Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned.”

Tottenham incident could benefit Arsenal

Fernandes was issued a straight red card by Chris Kavanagh for a challenge on James Maddison at Old Trafford.

That contentious decision came when Spurs were leading 1-0, and they made the most of the man advantage by winning 3-0.

United appealed and the panel unanimously felt the on-field decision of a red card was incorrect.

Tottenham fans cared not one jot what the appeal decision was as they had already done the damage at Old Trafford.

Putting rivalry aside for a moment, the red card shown to Lewis-Skelly seemed incredibly harsh.

If Arsenal use the footage of Fernandes’ challenge on Maddison, the precedent has been set for that red to then be overturned.
