Ange Postecoglou left with ‘Difficult’ Tottenham scenario amid Manchester United claim

John Wenham believes it has been “difficult” for Ange Postecoglou to promote academy players into the first-team at Tottenham this season.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose feels that Tottenham’s lack of games this season has impacted the development of younger players in North London.

Spurs played just three domestic cup matches while they were also without any form of European competition, which means the club’s high-flying Under-21 stars had few opportunities to impress.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that it will be a different story next year.

“It has been particularly difficult this season for Postecoglou to promote any of the academy players at the club into the first team,” Wenham said.

“Spurs have had no European football and were knocked out of both domestic cup competitions relatively early.

“With someone like Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United, there have been a lot more games on offer for him to be handed minutes with United having reached the FA Cup final and competed in the UEFA Champions League.

“Tottenham just haven’t had enough games this season, and there haven’t been many opportunities for younger players to play, but that will be different next season.”

Ange Postecoglou has plenty of young talent at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

This season has proven that there is no shortage of academy talent at Hotspur Way.

Several Under-18 and Under-21 stars will have caught Postecoglou’s eye, and the Australian will likely be keen to get those players more involved next season.

It is often wise to hand those young players minutes off the bench against lower-league opposition in the FA Cup or Carabao Cup before throwing them into the deep end in the Premier League.

Unfortunately for Spurs, all three of their cup games this season came against Premier League sides, and Postecoglou will hope for a deeper run in both competitions next season.
