Ange Postecoglou has ‘difficult’ decision to make amid Brandon Austin contract news at Tottenham
Brandon Austin’s new contract is a positive sign at Tottenham, but leaves Ange Postecoglou with a decision to make over Alfie Whiteman, Paul Robinson has said.
The club confirmed [28 May] that the 25-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2029, likely as a backup to Guglielmo Vicario.
Whiteman, however, has struggled to make an impact for Spurs, having only made one senior appearance since 2016, leaving Postecoglou with a tough decision over his goalkeepers.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “He’s a good, young player. Ange is obviously building for going forward. The thing with players like Brandon Austin and Mikey Moore with Ange Postecoglou is that he’s not just there to right the first team, win a trophy and disappear.
“In one of his very first press conferences at Tottenham, he spoke about building a side that can compete regularly. When you look at the number of youngsters who have come through the academy, the manager understands the quality of youth so he’s putting the foundations down. His eyes are not just fixed on the first team.
“It’s difficult because Alfie Whiteman hasn’t really been given a look-in this season. The squad has been utilised, so it’s hard for a player like that to break into the side, especially at the top level.
“Whether the club let him go out on loan or let him go when a player doesn’t play week in and week out, it’s tough to know what the club is thinking.”

Having started Spurs’ friendly against Newcastle United last month, it appears Postecoglou is happy with Austin as his replacement shot-stopper for Vicario.
Whiteman’s career, on the other hand, continues to stall, with the 25-year-old only playing a single senior game for the Lilywhites in eight years. With almost 40 loan appearances for Degefors, a loan move could be the ideal move this summer.
