Ange Postecoglou can take Tottenham to the next level with ‘astronomical’ January transfer for Conor Gallagher

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Ange Postecoglou could help Tottenham become even better with the signing of Conor Gallagher according to Alan Hutton, even though the deal makes no sense from Chelsea’s point of view.

The England international is once again being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this month, as Chelsea are reportedly willing to consider offers for the midfielder while Tottenham remain interested in securing his services [Sky Sports, 22 December]

Spurs were understood to have the groundwork of a potential deal in place during the summer window, only for the Blues to decide against selling the 23-year-old and therefore the move was put on ice.

While Hutton doesn’t understand why Chelsea would want to sell Gallagher, especially to a local rival, he does believe that the midfielder would massively improve Postecoglou’s side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“I think he’s a really good football player,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“He’s captain of Chelsea at times and as well he’s a homegrown player so if Chelsea do sell him, it’s 100 per cent profit for them. You look at the money they spent since Bohely went in there, it’s astronomical so that’s all profit for them.

“I don’t get it from a Chelsea point of view, I get it financially but I think he’s been one of their top players to sell him at this moment in time I think dents them.

“Then you sell him to a rival, it’s not ideal. But look if he comes into the likes of Tottenham, I think he makes them better.”

Gallagher has been a crucial part of the Chelsea team under the management of Mauricio Pochettino this season, starting 20 of the Blues’ 21 Premier League games, with his only absence being because of a suspension after a red card against Brighton.

While most at Stamford Bridge have struggled this term, the 23-year-old has been one of the standout players, picking up four assists and running the show from the middle of the park.

It wouldn’t go down well if he made the switch across London to join Postecoglou’s ranks this month, but it would certainly be a real steal for Spurs if they could get this deal over the line.
