Ange Postecoglou baffles after ‘violent’ incident in Tottenham defeat v Manchester City
John Wenham has no problem with the way Rodrigo Bentancur reacted after coming off against Manchester City.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the midfielder was right to feel “frustrated” after he was hooked by Ange Postecoglou in the 2-0 defeat to City on Tuesday (14 May).
Bentancur could be seen kicking his chair before throwing his shin pad to the ground.
Speaking after the match, Postecoglou was asked about the incident, with the Australian responding (via Football London, 14 May), “I didn’t notice. Don’t care.”
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – was surprised by Postecoglou’s response.
“I am not sure how Postecoglou didn’t see Bentancur’s violent battering of his chair,” Wenham said.
“He was playing really well, and he was probably frustrated to come off because he looked back to his normal level.
“That was his level before his injury, and he was running the game against potentially the best team in world football. Therefore, I imagine he was just frustrated to come off early and rightly so.
“I haven’t got a big issue with the way he reacted.”
Ange Postecoglou will be keen to speak to Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur
Whether or not he saw the incident live, Postecoglou will be well aware of what happened by now.
There have been many incidents of players feeling frustrated to come off down the years, but this reaction felt particularly strong.
Postecoglou’s decision to hook the 26-year-old was surprising, which might have contributed to the reaction.
The Australian will be keen to smooth things over with his midfielder to ensure this doesn’t become an issue going forward.
