‘Ambitious’ Tottenham signing already tipped for January exit
Thomas Frank could already face January turmoil at Tottenham despite the summer window closing days ago.
There has not been a quiet day in North London since the final days of the summer transfer window.
Tottenham ended the summer with Randal Kolo Muani signing, as well as Xavi Simons, while Daniel Levy has stepped down as Tottenham chairman.
It is believed that Joe Lewis is keen on focusing on boosting Tottenham’s sporting quality, which Levy has come under fire for in recent years.
But that does not seem like the end of it, as Frank already faces issues in January.

This article includes exclusive comments from Tottenham expert and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.
Mathys Tel could leave Tottenham in January
Tottenham triggered their buy-option for Mathys Tel to buy him for £30million from Bayern Munich this summer.
The striker impressed under Ange Postecoglou while on loan during the 2024/25 season. It is no wonder, with former Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic pointing out his “great mentality.”
In quotes provided by Football.London on 30 July 2023, he said: “Mathys is very ambitious, hard-working and has a great mentality. He works even on his days off.
“We all know what kind of potential he has. Mathys has everything to become a very good player. If he continues this way, he’ll have a great future ahead of him. We will build him up bit by bit.”
However, Tel was omitted from Tottenham’s UEFA Champions League phase squad, with Wilson Odobert getting the nod over him.
As such, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes he could be looking for an early exit this January transfer window on an initial loan basis.
“The other question has to be asked that with Tel and Odobert being so similar in their style of play, did we need to sign him?” Wenham said.
“I still think £30m for him, when you look at what he’s achieved so far and his relatively young age, it’s still good business, but it might be that the January window comes around, and if the situation hasn’t changed, he may have to go on loan and try and get a consistent run of games, because at this time, he needs to be playing.
“ I just don’t see where those opportunities without injuries are going to arise at Tottenham.”

What is next for Mathys Tel at Tottenham?
Frank has made it no secret that he is more of a fan of what Odobert can bring to the table as opposed to Tel.
Odobert shone for Frank during pre-season, while Tel’s most memorable moment was missing a penalty in Tottenham’s shootout against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final.
- Tel has featured in two matches for Frank this season, playing just 19 minutes
- Odobert has made three appearances this season, accumulating 58 minutes
As such, the only thing left for Tel to do is continue to put in the work in North London. With Richarlison, Dominic Solanke, and now Kolo Muani all competing for that centre-forward spot, Tel having consistent minutes with the senior team seems almost helpless.
But with several competitions to play in and potentially more than 50 games up for grabs, there will be ample opportunities for rotation. As such, Tel needs to put his best foot forward during the minutes he does receive.
