Alejo Veliz ‘future is in doubt’ just months after ‘masterstroke’ Tottenham transfer

Alejo Veliz’s Tottenham future is already in doubt after he made a loan move to Sevilla during the January transfer window, says Paul Robinson.

The Argentine striker only arrived at the club in the summer from Rosario in a £13million deal but the signing which was considered a potential “masterstroke” at the time [Football London, 4 August] has only manifested 42 Premier league minutes and one goal this term [Transfermarkt].

Considering Ange Postecoglou has been dealing with injuries and international absences Robinson thinks it is telling that the Australian was still prepared to let the 20-year-old go.

And having arrived in La Liga with knee injury suffered while still at Tottenham [talkSPORT, 4 January] he has yet to feature for Sevilla either, so the former Spurs keeper feels the youngster’s time in North London may not last long.

He exclusively told Tottenham News: “The fact that they’re not blessed with attacking options and they’re willing to let him go tells you a lot of what the manager thinks.

“We know that Ange is changing the squad. We know that he’s making changes and adjustments as to what he wants.

“But if they are short in that area he’s still seen fit for him to go out on loan it would suggest that his long-term future is in doubt.”

Veliz may be done at Tottenham already after Sevilla loan

Similar to another January loan departure, Japhet Tanganga, the prospects don’t appear to be great at Tottenham for Veliz if he has failed to get a look in under Postecoglou attacking stars ahead of him have been out of the way, such as Son Heung-min and James Maddison.

The injury he suffered last month clearly came at a terrible time, but he is now on the outside looking in, literally, as he hopes to prove his worth to his manager and Spurs have already been linked to higher-profile options since he arrived.

It doesn’t appear that he has shown enough in training or in sparse first-team opportunities to suggest that he would be useful to keep around in a fight for Champions League qualification, so he will need to rebound strongly in Spain when fit to change the view of him.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has been blamed for throwing away two Premier League points over a player who isn’t good enough.
