It would be “massive, absolutely huge” if Son Heung-min signs a new contract at Tottenham with a fresh long-term deal mooted, Alan Hutton has said.
South Korea ace Son has been a huge fan favourite at Spurs since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and was made captain in the summer after Hugo Lloris fell out of favour and Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich.
He has taken on the responsibility with aplomb, scoring 10 Premier League goals this term to step up in the absence of Kane.
Daily Star journalist Paul Brown has reported to GiveMeSport (19 December) that Spurs wouldn’t have any issues with getting Son to renew his agreement in North London as he’s happy at the club.
Brown said the same for Pape Matar Sarr after it was confirmed earlier this month that Destiny Udogie has penned a fresh contract at Spurs.
Speaking to Tottenham News, Hutton thinks it would be hugely welcome news for fans if Son does put pen to paper on an extended deal.
“It’s massive, absolutely huge. He’s the next in like to Kane if you want, they idolise him, he’s the talisman, however you want to say it,” he said.
“He’s that guy, their go-to guy, he’s the captain and he’s been a great servant to the club over the years.
“I think he’s always been there, very rarely injured and they rely on him, he’s very reliable so to reward him I’m not surprised and I’m pretty sure he loves the club as well and will want to stay.”
Son’s existing contract expires at the end of next season. However, Spurs do hold the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, meaning he’s effectively tied down until the summer of 2026 [Telegraph].
