Tottenham have ‘generational’ £15m talent lined up to join them already

Luka Vuskovic’s performances for Westerlo this season suggest that Tottenham were spot-on to pluck him from Hajduk Split as a 16-year-old.

The Sunday People‘s print edition (5 January, page 53) reported that the 17-year-old defender, who can’t join Spurs until he turns 18, is proving to be the “generational” talent the Lilywhites thought he’d be.

Centre-back Vuskovic has already scored six goals on loan for the Belgian side this term – more than any other teenager in Europe’s top 10 leagues – proving a set-piece threat with both his head and his feet.

Spurs paid £12million for the Croatian in September 2023 and his transfer value has already risen by £3m, but under contract until 2030, Vuskovic is a player they’ll be keen to keep hold of for the long run.

Luka Vuskovic can have a transformational effect on Tottenham

Given the injury woes his side have had in central defence so far this season, Ange Postecoglou will be having sleepless nights wondering if there’s a way to bring Vuskovic in before his 18th birthday.

Spurs, however, will be patting themselves on the back at having secured his signature before any other club got the chance, given his form in Belgium this term would surely have attracted multiple suitors.

Standing at six-foot-three and already a composed figure on the ball, Lilywhites fans the world over will view Vuskovic as a perfect foil for Micky van de Ven in the club’s backline for the foreseeable future.

Cristian Romero, who is Van de Ven’s partner in the starting XI when all are fit – a rarity at the back this season – has been linked with a big-money move away, but Postecoglou will be hesitant to allow this.

Having a World Cup to learn from in the form of Romero will surely only bring Vuskovic on further, and once the Croatian joins up with the squad, Spurs will have an embarrassment of riches in defence.
