Postecoglou ‘sack imminent at Tottenham’ after official Daniel Levy statement

Ange Postecoglou could be packing his bags at Tottenham imminently after an official Daniel Levy statement was released on Monday.

Postecoglou’s future was already under intense scrutiny in North London.

This was further evidenced by the fact that replacements are being lined up, with Andoni Iraola the number one target at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium [The Athletic].

However, after the latest statement from Levy, it looks as though Postecoglou’s fate is all but sealed.

Levy’s ‘intentions are clear’ after official statement at Tottenham

There has been plenty of speculation that Postecoglou will need to win the UEFA Europa League to have any chance of keeping his job, a task made all the more difficult after recent Dejan Kulusevski injury news.

With Spurs sat 14th in the Premier League, it looks as though the club’s only route into Europe next season is by lifting the Europa League in Bilbao in May.

And based on Levy’s recent statement, it appears as though this will in fact be the only outcome which will allow Postecoglou to keep his job at Tottenham.

Spurs’ upcoming Europa League fixtures

Spurs published their financial accounts for the year ended 30 June 2024 on Monday (31 March). Within those accounts, it was revealed that UEFA Prize Money had decreased from £56.2million to £1.3million after Spurs’ absence from Europe during the 2023/24 season.

Therefore, based on the financial hit this took on the club, Levy is unlikely to accept another manager failing to qualify for Europe, which would mean Postecoglou will be sacked if Spurs don’t win the Europa League.

And Levy’s comments appear to have all but confirmed this. Alongside the financial results, the 62-year-old published a statement in which he said, “We currently find ourselves in 14th position in the Premier League, navigating what has been a highly challenging season on the pitch.

“We are, however, in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League. Winning this competition would see welcome silverware and mean qualification for the UEFA Champions League. We must do everything we can to support the team in these final key stages.”

Postecoglou has a big task on his hands at Tottenham

While it is all well and good to make clear to Postecoglou that he needs to win the Europa League to keep his job, that doesn’t mean the Australian will achieve this.

Spurs will need to beat some top teams to lift the Europa League. However, based on their form this season, there is little to suggest they will be able to do this.

As a result, it looks as though Postecoglou’s days at Tottenham might be numbered.
