Mathys Tel flops, 8/10 Johnson shines – Tottenham player ratings v Ipswich
Tottenham recorded their third consecutive Premier League win by beating Ipswich Town 4-1
Ange Postecoglou made a brave decision to leave James Maddison on the bench at Portman Road on Saturday (22 February).
The Englishman scored the winner in the 1-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (16 February). However, there was no place for him in the team at Ipswich, which didn’t seem to matter as Brennan Johnson’s brace put Postecoglou’s side two ahead.
Omari Hutchinson offered the hosts a lifeline with a goal before half-time and although Ipswich threatened to equalise in the second, seeing a goal disallowed for offside, Djed Spence and Dejan Kulusevski were able to wrap up the points for Spurs.
Tottenham News has rated each player’s performance out of 10.
Premier League | Position | Points | GD |
Tottenham | 12th | 33 | +15 |
Crystal Palace | 13th | 33 | -1 |
Everton | 14th | 31 | -4 |
Manchester United | 15th | 30 | -7 |
Spence shines again for Tottenham v Ipswich
Guglielmo Vicario – 7
Made some big saves in the early moments of the match as Ipswich came out flying. The Italian shot-stopper could do very little about Hutchinson’s strike. Once again proved why he is so important for Postecoglou.
Destiny Udogie – 5
Looked to get forward when he could and didn’t have too much to do defensively. Hooked at the hour mark as Postecoglou looks to ease the 22-year-old back into action after a long layoff.
Archie Gray – 6
Seemed to struggle with Liam Delap’s physicality in the opening exchanges but slowly grew into the contest.
Kevin Danso – 7
Just like Gray, Danso struggled in the first few minutes but quickly settled into the match and looked positive on the ball, despite a few stray passes at times, while he was strong defensively.
Djed Spence – 8
One of Spurs’ better performers in recent weeks, the Englishman looked defensively solid once again, and demonstrated that he can make an impact in the final third too as he scored his second goal of the season late in the second half.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 7
A strong performance in the middle of the park.
Lucas Bergvall – 7
Showed some signs of quality going forward as he continues to become an important part of Postecoglou’s side.
Dejan Kulusevski – 6
Anonymous in the first half and while he didn’t offer much in the second he scored a delightful goal late on to wrap up all the points for Spurs.
Brennan Johnson – 8
Demonstrated to Spurs fans why he is so important to the team by scoring twice in the first half. Had a quiet second half before being hooked just past the hour mark. However, he made more than enough of an impact.

Mathys Tel flops for Tottenham v Ipswich
Mathys Tel – 3
Hardly touched the ball at Portman Road, and when he did, the 19-year-old offered zero attacking threat. If he continues to perform like that, it is hard to see Tottenham making his stay permanent.
Son Heung-min – 8
Looked a little bit like his old self, causing problems down the left-hand side and setting up Johnson’s two goals to register his eighth and ninth Premier League assists of the season. Much quieter in the second half as the South Korean tired before being replaced.
Subsitutes
James Maddison (On for Johnson, 65′) – 7
Added some energy in midfield and showed great footwork before providing an assist for Spence.

Pedro Porro (On for Udogie, 65′) – 5
Didn’t have much to do after coming on. A quiet afternoon for Porro, which is arguably much-needed.
Dane Scarlett (On for Tel, 74′) – 6
Showed great bravery as he won a flick on to set Kulusevski away for Spurs’ fourth, taking a wack from Jacob Greaves in the process.
Wilson Odobert (On for Son, 74′) – 4
Wasn’t really able to get into the match after his introduction.
Yves Bissouma (On for Bergvall, 85′) – N/A
